- Tools and techniques for efficient energy use in vertical farming
As the human population is overgrowing, the food demand worldwide has been increasing over the years. However, expensive agricultural tools, reduced availability of farming lands, uncertain farming output, and effects of climate change have adversely impacted food generation. Vertical farming comes as a solution that uses various techniques such as hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics farms. Farming can be conducted indoors while inputs like humidity control, energy sources, lighting, and temperature control crops and outputs like crop production and investment results can be monitored and controlled. This research includes analyzing different applications, data analysis, and software used to monitor and analyze various vertical farming data and design efficient and cost-effective vertical farming. Moreover, the vertical farming system uses large amounts of electricity for powering different equipment types such as air conditioning systems, osmotic systems, fertigation units, and pumps. A vertical farm is also an eco-friendly solution with reduced water usage, less exposure to chemicals, and optimized spaces. These systems can also be enhanced by installing renewable energy resources such as. wind, and solar energy. Hence a vertical farming system can be modeled as a complex system and evaluate its performance. This research aims to understand various tools and techniques available to assess the performance of vertical farming systems with a holistic view.
